why register and smoke test your diesel

Why should I register and smoke test my diesel?

You should register with CTC-VIS (Clean Truck Check Vehicle Inspection System) because it's mandatory in California for any heavy-duty vehicle (over 14,000 pounds) operating on state roads, and registering allows you to comply with the Clean Truck Check program, ensuring your vehicle's emissions control system is functioning properly, preventing potential registration holds at the DMV if you don't register and comply with emissions testing requirements; essentially, it's a way to avoid penalties and maintain legal operation of your truck in California.

Key points about CTC-VIS registration:

  • Compliance with Clean Truck Check: This program, run by the California Air Resources Board (CARB), aims to reduce air pollution by monitoring and regulating emissions from heavy-duty vehicles.
  • Registration requirement: All eligible heavy-duty vehicles operating in California must be registered on CTC-VIS.
  • Avoiding registration holds: Failure to register and comply with Clean Truck Check regulations can lead to a DMV registration hold on your vehicle.
  • Emissions testing: Through CTC-VIS, you can schedule and manage your vehicle's emissions testing to ensure it meets compliance standards.
  • Fee payments: You can also pay required compliance fees through the CTC-VIS portal.
